CRC Brākleen is my secret weapon to avoid the dry cleaner when misfortune befalls a non-washable item like a tie, a formal dress, a suit jacket or a silk blouse. CRC Brākleen magically removes oily stains like butter, perfume or lotion from any dry-cleanable fabric.
It doesn't seem like something that would be safe for delicate fibers, but in fact, the contents of this magical red can have been unchanged for over half a century: pure, unadulterated tetrachloroethylene, also known as perchloroethylene or "perc" - mainstay of dry cleaning. Perc is a chlorinated solvent - which means it's surprisingly gentle on all dry-cleanable fabrics - many Dry Clean Only care tags even specify the use of perc solvent.
You don't have to choose CRC Brākleen, but you do need to choose "chlorinated brake cleaner" if you choose another brand. And if you do choose CRC Brākleen, you need to ensure you have this RED can; the other colors are a different formula that is not dry cleaning fluid.
You'll want to use this in a well-ventilated space or outdoors. Just spray a small amount of the solvent through the back of the stain onto a white cotton cloth. Use enough to saturate. Let it stand thirty seconds to a minute and then gently wipe and blot the stain. Repeat as needed. Allow the garment to dry thoroughly before wearing.
